چکیده

Objective: Myostatin has recently been proposed as an important factor that not only regulates skeletal muscle mass, but also body fat mass. The aim of our study is to explore serum myostatin levels in overweight patients and its association with metabolic-related characteristics. Methods: 40 overweight patients and 40 normal weight controls were recruited, and serum myostatin were measured by ELISA methods and the relationships between myostatin and metabolic-related parameters were investigated. Results: Serum myostatin concentrations were significantly increased in overweight patients compared with normal weight controls (10.99±1.99 vs. 9.75±0.96 ng/ml, P=0.001) and positively correlated with body weight (r = 0.272, P=0.015), BMI (r = 0.263, P=0.018), waist circumference (r = 0.291, P=0.009), hip circumference (r = 0.336, P=0.002) and TNF(r = 0.611, P<0.001) in all subjects. Contrarily, serum adiponectin levels were negatively associated with body weight (r = -0.270, P=0.018), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) (r = -0.253, P=0.027), TG (r = -0.235, P=0.040), ALT (r = -0.268, P=0.019), uric acid (UA) (r = -0.262, P=0.021) and positively correlated with HDL (r = 0.454, P<0.001). Conclusion: Serum myostatin levels in overweight patients are notably increased and positively correlated with BMI, body weight, waist and hip circumference, TNF, suggesting myostatin is a metabolic regulatory factor.

Serum concentration of myostatin, insulin and glucose response to continuous and discontinuous exercises in overweight menopausal and menstrual women

Introduction: Myostatin regulates skeletal muscle mass and adipogenesis, but serum response to continuous and discontinuous exercises training it has not been studied in menopause and menstrual groups of women. The purpose of this study was to investigate the serum response of myostatin, insulin and glucose to use four different aerobic exercises training in menopause and menstrual groups of wo...

Highly Specific Detection of Myostatin Prodomain by an Immunoradiometric Sandwich Assay in Serum of Healthy Individuals and Patients

BACKGROUND Myostatin is a muscle derived factor that functions as a negative regulator of skeletal muscle growth. Induction of myostatin expression was observed in rodent models of muscle wasting and in cachectic patients with cancer or pulmonary disease. Therefore, there is an increasing interest to use serum myostatin as a biomarker. METHODS We established an immunoradiometric sandwich assa...

Elevated serum myostatin level is associated with worse survival in patients with liver cirrhosis

BACKGROUND We aimed to elucidate the relationship between serum myostatin levels and other markers including skeletal muscle mass and to investigate the influence of serum myostatin levels on survival for patients with liver cirrhosis (LC). METHODS A total of 198 LC subjects were analysed in this study. Myostatin levels were measured using stored sera. We retrospectively investigated the rela...

Twelve-week resistance training decreases myostatin level and improves insulin sensitivity in overweight-obese women

Myostatin is a secreted protein that acts as a potent inhibitor of skeletal muscle growth. Inactivation of myostatin increases muscle mass and decreases insulin resistance. The aim of this study was to determine if the improvement in insulin resistance after resistance training is associated with a decline in serum levels of myostatin. A sample of 19 obese-overweight women (age= 23.2±3.4 yr, bo...

Is There Correlation between Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria and Elevated Serum IgE? A Pilot Study

Background: The etiology of urticaria is recognized only in a minority of cases. Allergies to a wide variety of agents have been suspected, as well as hyper reactivity to food additives or drugs. Recently, autoimmune reaction to immunoglobulin E (IgE) and later to high-affinity IgE receptors on mast cells has been reported. The aim of this study was to show elevated serum IgE levels in the pati...
